Norwich Union RFC travelled to Swaffham to play in the annual Swaffham RFC Summer 7s tournament. The side’s first of four pool games was against Wise Monkeys, who proved to be the toughest opponents of the day and ran in 49 unanswered points against Union who were shell shocked by the speed, power and intensity of the shortened version of the game.
Next up were the Queens Dragoon Guards, In an improved performance Union scored a try through Hunt in the opening exchanges, but QDG were able to level the score immediately and went on to score without answer claiming a 36-7 victory.
The third game was against Ely and again Union showed further improvement scoring twice through Norgate and Hunt, however Ely matched and improved on the Union try count recording a final score of 33-12.
The last pool game was against St Pauls, this was a much closer affair. There was a try apiece in the first half, with Clarke scoring for Union, so the second half was evenly balanced and whilst Hunt was yet again on the score sheet, St Pauls were able to capitalise on mistakes by Union to score a further two tries resulting in a 17-10 victory.
Union’s last game of the day was a fifth tier final against Rum’Uns a side consisting of players from Unions local Rivals Norwich RFC. Team captain Arbon decided to start the game with a youthful and fast team in an effort to tire the opposition before unleashing the more experienced squad members. This proved to be just the right tactic with Norgate demonstrating both power and pace to score a brace of tries, Clarke was again on the score sheet spotting a gap and racing to the line to score. The final try came from Shucksmith who blasted through a would be tackler to score on the left flank. Resulting in a 24-5 victory and a great way to finish the tournament.
Union’s man of the tournament was Jake Clarke who in the words of team manager Davis "was everywhere in defence and attack"
