Under-performing Union blown away

By a well organised North Walsham team

Match Report: Gareth Davis

A huge reality check at Walsham as an under-performing Union were blown away by a very well organised Walsham side. One saving grace was that their coach told said it was the strongest side they had put out all season, with no less than 6 of their squad involved with their firsts the previous week.

North Walsham's scored a try from the first play, and like a few that followed a missed tackle in midfield led to a score by their Fijian winger scoring the first of his hat-trick. It was 12-nil before Union got hold of the ball and when they began to impose their game, however they were punished with a succession of penalties, which killed any momentum.

Union scored a well worked try through wing Graham Hunt as number 8 Jon Spicker picked from the base and fed scrum half Lloyd Davis who threw a long pass for Graham Hunt to crash over. Union's best period followed despite our line outs being heavily disrupted by Collier in the North Walsham second row.

Strong carrying through Simon Pitcher, John Madden and Chris Spenceley saw Union make inroads as fly half Tom Whitehouse started to bring inside centre Matthew Cook and the backs into the game. Successes on the gain line was short-lived as Union were penalised at the breakdown, North Walsham scored five tries in all by half time to take a 31-10 lead. Ryan Day sneaking over following a good scrum but it was not enough to stem the tide.

A better second half performance went unrewarded as again Union were turned over three times on the try line much to the delight of the home supporters.

Walsham scored two further tries in the second half, following lazy offside decisions which were of Union's own making. While the scorecard is probably not a true reflection of the game, Union cannot complain about the result.

After the game Union coach Gareth Davis said "We have to be more accurate at set piece and smarter as the better sides in this league all have packs as strong as ours. We didn't get it right and disappointment will fuel a big response in our next match.
Attitude, commitment (of which Oli Ward showed in abundance as his efforts put many of the team to shame), organisation and set piece needs to improve massively if the season is not to fade away. I'm expecting good numbers at training on 3rd January when we resume after the Christmas break to get some work done and prepare us for the next stage of tough games. In reality we are punching above our weight but the things we were doing so well have fallen away of late. Let's regather and get back to what we do best. Great effort to all involved and thanks guys"
