Union move to second place in the league
Following a dominant display against Diss 2nd XV
Match Report: Gareth Davis
Last week's sloppy display was put to bed as a commanding performance which saw Union run out comprehensive winners in front of a gathering of club stalwarts Union had too much power for a Diss side who have had the better of us for many seasons.
Early drives through the pack and some driving line outs saw bulldozer Craig Dunbar power over followed by a good finish from Callum Slaughter. Union dominated the first phase and our much-improved defensive shape ensured Diss were kept at bay. Mishandled move saw Diss get a breakaway try before further tries from Jon Spicker and Ben Bond-Webster saw the first half out with a 20-7 lead.
The half time discussion was about the breakdown and Union not forcing things too much. A reverse penalty count of 18 ensured Diss were kept interested. Most penalties were for holding on in the tackle as we failed to clear out their dangerous poachers over the ball.
Union continued to dominate the tight phases and some excellent planned set moves were rewarded as a rampaging Michael Shucksmith and Craig Dunbar added further tries. A couple of yellow cards saw some disruption to our shape as Diss scored to give the scoreboard a closer look.
After the game Coach Gareth Davis said “On the whole, a satisfying performance that owed much to the improvement of defensive sets. These were worked on at training which is ultimately where the hard work happens. Positive to put things into practice but I asked players at the final whistle can we be better and the answer was yes. Great thanks once again to the caterers doing their thing and the hard
-working volunteers putting in place an environment where players concentrate on the game. A well-attended Presidents lunch and lovely to see the club legends again. See you all later in the season guys. Such a good vibe about the club so let's keep up the levels. Well done all involved.”
