Union back to winning ways
In a tight affair away at Great Yarmouth-Broadland
Match report: Gareth Davis
Union made short trip to a sunny Yarmouth with a few changes and first appearance of season for Ryan Day and Tom Easton as a replacement. Graham Hunt reverted to scrum half with Callum Slaughter starting at full back. The forwards were missing Jake Rodwell so only a small reshuffle needed.
An insipid warm up preceded a disappointing first period where Union made many unforced errors and contributed to a poor penalty count again. “If the ball is lost, let them have it, reset and defend again, no lying around the ruck or coming off feet guys” was the message sent on from Coach Gareth Davis.
Union did manage to convert one try as try scored Jon Spicker and the extras added by Simon Bunting. Alas, Union allowed Broadland an opportunity to get one back on stroke of half time but maintained a narrow 7-5 lead.
Harsh words from the Coach at half time had an adverse effect as a timid Union conceded two quick tries. The visitors regrouped however, and got the tries back through another Jon Spicker and a penalty try from repeated infringements by the home side on their own line.
As the sun shone down, we dropped off the pace again and the home team regained the lead heading to the final quarter. It was the backs who came to the fore to save the game. A great break from a bulldozing Matthew Cook followed by jinky run and offload by Ryan Day saw Callum slaughter released on half way and outpacing the defence to score the try of the game. Union held firm despite a couple of near misses for the hosts and finished the game with the backs looking dangerous.
After the match Coach Gareth Davis said “Honest players will concede that the performance was way below standards set and a disjointed game was saved by individual skills and not with the solid game plan we have developed. We need to get things right for next games and get our minds set too. Maybe we were complacent but we made our own problems all match. On a positive note the scrum much improved as was the mauling, some of the running out of defence through Oli Wars and others relieved the pressure too. Expecting a big response at training and in next week's game”
